  The Majik: Kara’s Story

  by MMT

  Prologue Part One: Knowledge

  Eight years before Modern Day

A party is in full swing at the Majikian-Zzynj household.

The guests of the party, most of who are brutal enemies don't know the other kind is there.

One Zzynj man talking to a Majikian man says:

"Well now, who invited you to this lovely party?"

To this the Majikian man answers:

"Why the lovely Majikian Lady of course!"

"Oh." says the Zzynj man, rather put off.

"The Zzynj man of the house invited ME!"

"Wait a minute," the Majikian man replies.

"Is there a conspiracy?! Are there Zzynjs in this very house?!"

"Is something wrong, men?" Erika Majikian asks sweeping over to the arguing men. She is wearing a sleeveless red dress with orange shoulder length fingerless gloves.

"Ah, Ms. Majikian." the Majikian man says, straitening his orange tie.

"We were just arguing. Are there really Zzynj men in this house?!"

Erika laughs, a kind, gentle sound that softened your heart.

"I think I would know if there were Zzynj men in my house." She answers, carefully avoiding the question.

"Good, good." The Majikian man replies, satisfied.

The Zzynj man looked at him as if he was crazy.

  "SHE'S Majikian you fool!"

"You will calm down now and pretend this never happened." Erika says, waving her hands over them.

"And everyone you talk to will not question the Majikian OR the Zzynj. Alright?"

"Yes. Ms. Majikian." They reply slowly and haltingly.

"Good." She says and turned away.

A little girl of six stares up at her. The girl is wearing a rose colored dress that fell gently over one shoulder with tiny, orange shoes.

  "Mama?" The girl says.

  "That was awesome!!!"

  Erika smiles.

  "You know Kara," she says.

"You can to it too. Pretend you're invisible and can see out of the back of your head."

  Kara vanishes.

"I see Daddy!" She cries and turns visible again.

It was true. Her father, Donald Zzynj is coming up behind Kara.

"Mind if I steal your mother for a few moments?" He asks teasingly.

"Nope!" Kara answers smiling widely and went off to talk to her "friends".

Erika watched her go, her face long.

Don takes Erika in his arms just as the orchestra starts to play a slow number.

"It's okay to be sad Erika dear," Don says.

She lays her head on his shoulder.

"Sometimes I wish we didn't have to leave her all alone so young. I mean, she's only six."

"Erika," Don says turning slightly to face her.

"We have to leave. You need to find out how to transfer your Majik into Kara when you die."

  "I know." Erika replies.

"I just wish I wasn't dying so soon. Seven months is not so far away and I won't see either of my daughters grow up."

  Don looks at her.

"You haven't told her yet have you?" He asks.

  Erika sighs.

"No. How can I tell her she will have a sister but no mother soon? She'd rather have a mother I presume."

  Don looks down.

  "What?" Erika asks.

"I'm uh, remarrying after you die." He says, his eyes on the ground.

  "What! To whom?" Erika asks.

  "Your sister." He mumbles.

"Caya? The thieving, white-blond haired twin sister of mine! The one who killed her husband after two children and four years of marriage? THAT sister?"

  "Yes."

Erika sighs, all the energy drained out of her.

"Ok. So long as they have a mother."

                         ********

"Goodnight!" Don calls, Erika laying her head against his chest, as the last of the partygoers’ lights disappeared.

"I'm going to tell her," Erika mutters sleepily.

  "Alright then." Don replies.

"Kara?!" Erika cries, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes.

"Yes Mama?" Kara replies popping out from behind the staircase.

"What were you doing back there?" Erika asks. "Oh never mind Kara. Here, I wanted to talk to you."

Something in Erika's eyes must of conveyed something that she didn't pick up on. But Kara did.

"Something's wrong, I can tell. There's something different about you." Kara says, concern welling up in her eyes.

Erika's eyes widen. Was it possible Kara had guessed Erika's secret?

"Uh, nothing's wrong dear, nothing at all. I just wanted to tell you that your father and I are going away for a while. Your father at least will be back in a year."

"Why are you leaving?" Kara asks her eyes sad.

Erika smiles. A slow, sad smile. Luckily, Kara hadn't caught that her mother was never coming back.

"We just have to leave Kara, alright?"

  Kara nods.

"Before I leave I need to tell you our family secret."

"Oh! What is it!?" Kara asks excitedly, sadness forgotten.

"Your middle name. You can only use it if you have great need for another identity. Yours is Lily."

  "Ok," Kara replies.

  "What's yours?"

Erika smiles sadly, tears nearly coming to her eyes.

"Lucy," she chokes out before she could start crying.

"Now up to bed with you." Erika says, picking Kara up and kissing her on the top of the head.

"You're getting to old for this, Kara." Erika says playfully nearly staggering under Kara's weight.

By the time they reach the top of the stairs Erika was panting but smiling.

At Kara's door, Kara jumps out of her mothers arms and runs in.

Erika sighs, leaning heavily against the door, exhausted from the climb up the stairs.

"Ok Mama! All ready!" Kara's sweet little voice says.

  Erika smiles and goes in.

"Goodnight, Kara." She says, tears filling up in her eyes, some leaking out on to Kara's bed.

"'Night Mama." Kara says and yawns.

Erika tiptoes out and runs into Don.

"Don!" She whispers loudly, her heart nearly beating out of her chest.

  "You scared me!"

He takes her in his arms and wipes away her tears. She leans heavily against him, more tears spilling out.

"I'm sorry dear." Don says quietly.

"How much did you tell her?"

Erika gives a little gasp and responds.

"Only that we were leaving." She is on to us, Don! She knows something's different. I wish I had the courage to tell her about her sister."

Don pulls her head off his shoulder and she looks at him.

"Erika. It's good she doesn't know otherwise she'd be worried sick about you."

She snuggles her head against his chest as they walk toward their bedroom.

  "You're right..." She says sleepily.

"It's better that she doesn't know."

Prologue Part Two: To be a Majikian-Zzynj

My name is Kara, Kara Majikian-Zzynj. I am 14 years old and from the planet of Araen.

That was the last time I saw my mother alive.

The next morning I woke up in my neighbor's house to a 10 year old boy staring at me.

  “Hello. I’m Alexo. Your neighbor.

I watched the warm rain fall down the windowsill.

Maya paced in the background wondering where Alexo could be.
